Who Has the Biggest Boards in Baseball?

Posted by InStadium on Jul 12, 2018 4:13:25 PM

When it comes to video boards and sports the trend is decidedly bigger is better. As seen across indoor and outdoor stadiums for pro and college sports nationwide, teams are competing to outsize each other with larger high-definition screens and more booming audio experiences.

Just ten years ago the average new video board installed in major league baseball (MLB) stadiums was 2,600 square feet, whereas now the average size is roughly 6,000 square feet.  The largest board in MLB is currently at the home of the Cleveland Indians, a massive screen that is 221 feet wide by 59 feet tall – more than 13,000 square feet of high-definition video.

Not only are teams competing with each other in the bigger-is-better video game, but they are also competing for fans’ attention – that of a captivated audience that pays bigger ticket prices each year. Fans want more engaging experiences and are getting just that - with screens that are larger than they can see anywhere else.

Bigger VIDEO Screens FOR BIGGER BRAND EXPERIENCES

Of course, these enhancements also generate additional revenue with more impactful and verified advertising on these larger screens. Live sports provides a powerful way for fans to experience branding. Since the ads are targeted to baseball’s desirable demographic and the screens showcase brand messages that can’t be skipped, blocked, or clicked on by bots, live sports is a coveted medium. Add in a brand-safe environment -- where people are in a good mood and studies show more receptive to brand messaging – it’s an advertiser’s dream come true. Plus, for the stats enthusiasts, on massive video boards it’s easy to see player and league analytics throughout the game, mixed in with entertaining game day productions, so eyes can be glued to the boards throughout the game.

The 2018 video board installations have both exceeded 8,000 square feet of high-definition video space – in Denver and Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Angels installed a new video board this year which pushed them from number 25 in MLB video board sizes to number 3. At three times the size of their old board, the new 9,500 square foot right field video display features 7.7 million LEDs and dwarfs their prior 3,200 square foot board which the manufacturer Daktronics says equals approximately 890 60-inch HD televisions.

 Rockies Video Board

The Colorado Rockies new video board is 258 percent larger than their former board and, with the rock formation that displays the Rockies logo, the total video board is the equivalent of 784 60-inch televisions. No doubt it would take a lot to miss what’s going on via these screens once inside the ballpark.

More than one-third of MLB teams have installed new video boards over the past five years, a coast-to-coast trend to improve the game day experience. Here are the twelve teams with the newest video boards in baseball.
